Decathlete Sintnicolaas opens EC Track Cycling with a bang!

On Thursday evening, top athlete Eelco Sintnicolaas has officially opened the European Championships Track Cycling. He originates from Apeldoorn and came in fifth at the Olympic decathlon in London last year. Sintnicolaas opened the EC by firing a starting gun after a two and a half hours during opening program with entertainment and sports. The EC at the Omnisport velodrome starts Friday 1pm and ends Sunday evening.

The opening of the three-day track event was a shiny one. The youth riders started the night on bikes with illuminated wheels. Like a glow in the dark they found their way in a dark Omnisport. There was a race behind the derny’s where amateurs battled and of course there was a parade of flags of the participating countries. The sport events finished with several exciting races where the stars of the future were already shining.

The young riders rode against procyclists Boy and Danny van Poppel. After a somewhat hestitating start, the two brothers of Vacansoleil-DCM offered their youthful opponents, good opposition.

“Riding on a track bike always takes some time to get used to,” Boy van Poppel said. “But it’s funny to ride on the track again,” his younger brother Danny acknowledged. “We haven’t done that a lot in the past few years,” the youngest Tour de France participant since World War II added.

Then it was up to Sintnicolaas, himself an European indoor heptathlon champion. Skilfully he took the gun from his pocket and fired it. “I live around the corner from here so it was quite simple to say yes when the organization asked me to officially open the EC. I think it’s great that Omnisport hosts another big event. Sunday my training schedule is empty so it might be a good opportunity to see the last day of these championships,” he concluded.
